Liu joined Alibaba in 2021 and has remained part of Qwen’s core research and development team since then. The move comes after a series of leadership changes around the company’s AI model organization this year. In March, Qwen technical lead Lin Junyang left to start a business. In June, Zhou Jingren, who had been overseeing AI model research and development, stepped down from related management duties and became Alibaba’s chief scientist. With Liu’s appointment, the leadership structure for the Qwen large language model line has now been formally clarified after two rounds of changes within roughly half a year. Liu has also been placed prominently in this year’s Yunqi Conference lineup, where the official speaker list shows him immediately after Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai and CEO Eddie Wu.
